Jan Paul van Hecke Completes £52 Million Move to Tottenham Hotspur from Brighton
Dutch international defender Jan Paul van Hecke has sealed a high-profile transfer to Tottenham Hotspur in a deal worth £52 million. The 26-year-old has penned a long-term contract at Spurs, where he will link up once again with head coach Roberto de Zerbi.
Tottenham Hotspur have completed the signing of Netherlands international Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton & Hove Albion for a fee of £52 million, with the 26-year-old defender committing to a long-term contract at the North London club.
The move marks a reunion between Van Hecke and Spurs head coach Roberto de Zerbi, under whom the defender previously played during his time at Brighton. Van Hecke expressed his excitement at the prospect of working with his former manager again, and revealed that fellow Dutch international and Spurs teammate Micky van de Ven had spoken highly of the club. He also described the move as a dream come true and said he was eagerly looking forward to representing the club at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as a home player, having previously visited as an opponent.
The acquisition makes Van Hecke Tottenham's third signing of the summer, following the free transfers of left-back Andy Robertson and centre-back Marcos Senesi. His departure from Brighton had appeared increasingly likely after it became clear he had no intention of extending his contract, which had just one year remaining.
Van Hecke originally joined Brighton from Dutch side NAC Breda in 2020, but it took two years before he established himself in the first team. Once he did, he became a key figure for the Seagulls, starting 36 Premier League matches last season as Brighton secured qualification for the Conference League. In total, he made 131 appearances for the East Sussex club.
The defender is currently representing the Netherlands at the World Cup, where he is competing alongside his new Spurs teammate Micky van de Ven.
Brighton are already working on finding a replacement, with 19-year-old Tottenham centre-back Luka Vuskovic emerging as their primary target. The Croatian youngster has attracted strong interest from the Seagulls, though Spurs have so far rejected two bids for the prospect, with the most recent offer reportedly reaching £35 million.
