Crystal Palace Appeal Jean-Philippe Mateta Red Card After Tottenham Defeat

Crystal Palace have lodged an appeal against the red card shown to striker Jean-Philippe Mateta during their match against Tottenham. The forward faces a three-match ban that could leave the relegation-threatened side severely depleted in attack.

Crystal Palace have submitted an appeal against the red card issued to Jean-Philippe Mateta in their recent loss to Tottenham. The French forward was sent off in the 13th minute of the contest after catching Micky van de Ven with a studs-up challenge as both players contested a loose ball. Referee Michael Oliver initially cautioned Mateta with a yellow card before upgrading the punishment to a dismissal following a VAR review.

Palace have contested the decision by maintaining that the incident was entirely accidental. The club argues that Mateta was focused solely on the ball and was completely unaware of Van de Ven approaching when the contact occurred.

The early dismissal left the Eagles with 10 men, and they went on to suffer another defeat following goals from Archie Gray and Jan Paul van Hecke. The result keeps Palace firmly within the relegation zone.

A potential three-match ban for Mateta creates a significant problem for under-pressure manager Pierre Sage, who is already coping with an injury to fellow forward Jorgen Strand Larsen. Should the club's appeal prove unsuccessful, Mateta will be forced to sit out Sunday's home fixture against Liverpool, as well as subsequent league matches against Coventry City and Hull City. That outcome would leave Eddie Nketiah as the team's only available recognized striker.
