Manchester United overturned a two-goal first-half deficit to secure a thrilling Champions League victory over Roma at Old Trafford. Matheus Cunha starred by winning a penalty and scoring two late goals before being sent off in stoppage time. The dramatic win provides a timely boost for manager Michael Carrick ahead of their upcoming domestic fixture.

Manchester United produced a remarkable second-half turnaround to defeat Roma in the Champions League, recovering from a two-goal deficit at Old Trafford through the heroics of Matheus Cunha.

United had previously trailed within the first two minutes of their last two European matches, but their relief at surviving the opening exchanges was short-lived. Just 11 minutes in, Roma seized the advantage when Rodrigo Mora’s pass sliced through the home defence following a midfield turnover, allowing Matias Soule to finish past Senne Lammens in a one-on-one situation.

Matters worsened for the hosts shortly after when Ayden Heaven handled Soule’s effort inside the penalty area. Donyell Malen stepped up to convert the spot-kick for his fourth Champions League goal of the campaign, marking the earliest a visiting team has ever scored twice in major European competition at Old Trafford. Michael Carrick’s side struggled to respond and were fortunate not to fall further behind before the interval. Lammens made a diving save to deny a fierce drive from Malen, while Soule curled an effort narrowly wide with the final kick of a first half that concluded with the home crowd booing United off the pitch.

The Red Devils emerged with renewed purpose after the break and were awarded a penalty when Gianluca Mancini fouled Cunha in the area. Bruno Fernandes saw his initial attempt saved, but a retake was ordered after Bryan Cristante encroached into the box before clearing the rebound. Fernandes made no mistake on the second attempt to halve the deficit.

United nearly leveled immediately from the restart, but Bryan Mbeumo’s strike hit the inside of both posts before bouncing away to safety. The hosts continued to apply pressure, though referee Jesus Gil Manzano dismissed strong appeals for another penalty after Harry Maguire went down under challenge at the back post.

The persistence paid off seven minutes from time. Cunha capitalized on an error by Leonardo Balerdi to steer home a cross from Fernandes, bringing United level. Just moments later, substitute Shea Lacey found Cunha, who drove a powerful finish into the near post to complete the turnaround and put United ahead.

The match ended on a turbulent note for Cunha, who received a second yellow card for a late challenge during stoppage time. Despite the dismissal, the Brazilian's decisive performance secured a crucial victory that eases the pressure on Carrick ahead of their Sunday clash with Aston Villa.
